Selling Your Company? Watch Out For Valuations!

Are you facing the prospect of selling your company, possibly one you founded? If you are a baby boomer and own a business, the answer is almost certainly yes, even if you don’t yet think so. But you want to be extra careful in determining how much the company is worth.

We spoke with a man named Chris—he asked us not to use his last name–who in 1992 started an environmental consulting firm. Recently he sold a piece of the business for more than the previous valuation of the whole company. He then sold the rest to an ESOP, avoiding (or at least deferring) a seven-figure tax bill.
